Chardonnay has become the most popular fine wine white grape in the world. It is fairly easy to grow and if not left on the vine too long it has excellent acidity accompanied by generous possibilities of fruit composition depending on the growing region. While its reputation was established in Burgundy, France, as it has migrated to other growing regions, it has varied widely. This can be attributed directly to regional growing conditions and especially soil composition. While here in California the Chardonnay varietal is identified on the label, because of its strong regional identity, many times Chardonnay is indicated on wine bottle labels not by it's varietal name but rather by it's regional origin for example, Champagne or Chablis, denoting the importance of the affect of terroir.

Merlot is the primary grape in Saint-Emilion and Pomerol of Bordeaux France. Its relatively friendly or low maintenance growing characteristics have encouraged the grape to be incorporated into the vineyard management of just about every burgeoning, wine- grape-growing country in the world. Compared to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot grapes ripen fairly early and have lower tannins and higher sugar levels. The grape has suffered a faltering reputation due to its overproduction. This is largely due to its popularity as a blending grape. Respect is due to Merlot especially, simply standing on its own, as some of the great wines of the world, commanding the most expensive prices in the world are made of Merlot.

Pinot Noirs crowning achievement has been its prominence in Burgundys Cote D Or region. Preferring a long, cool growing season the grape as caught on in many coast communities especially in California and Oregon where it takes on richer fruit components. It is a finicky grape that mutates quickly and therefore difficult to grow causing it to be one of the more expensive and challenging grapes to grow as well as hobbies to have. Prestige is rightfully applied to those producers who have seemingly mastered the craft of consistently good Pinot Noir.

Syrah/Petit Sirah - This category overlaps with our Domestic Red Rhone category which is rather appropriate as the origins of Petit Syrah are rather cloudy as to whether their heritage is linked to Syrah and/or other varieties prominent in the Rhone Valley of France. Refer to Domestic Red Rhone for more wines blended with Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Petit Sirah gained mention in the 1880s in California and is still largely planted here more so than elsewhere in the world. It plenty of tannin and deep, dark, black fruit color, often described as Inky. It is full bodied and generally has decent agability and bold fruit composition.

Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon - These varieties are commonly coined as white Bordeaux due to their tremendous success in the Bordeaux region of France. Sauvignon Blanc is a tart, dry, white with palate cleansing acidity. Semillion is commonly used as a blending wine however, it is good to remember that Sauternes, the most expensive dessert wines in the world are dependent on Semillons late harvest characteristics namely its susceptibility to botrytis.

Zinfandel - California is by far, the largest producer of Zinfandel followed by its cousin Primitivo which is indigenous to and made popular by Puglia, Italy. Our California Zinfandel is said to be traced back via DNA fingerprinting to strains of Zin from Croatia. Domestic Zinfandel is most often described as jammy with big berry like components, plenty of tannins, spicy and sometimes peppery flavors. It is often bold and structured with decent agability.
