Chardonnay
Chardonnay has become the most popular fine wine white grape in the world. It is fairly easy to grow and if not left on the vine too long it has excellent acidity accompanied by generous possibilities of fruit composition depending on the growing region. While its reputation was established in Burgundy, France, as it has migrated to other growing regions, it has varied widely. This can be attributed directly to regional growing conditions and especially soil composition. While here in California the Chardonnay varietal is identified on the label, because of its strong regional identity, many times Chardonnay is indicated on wine bottle labels not by it's varietal name but rather by it's regional origin for example, Champagne or Chablis, denoting the importance of the affect of terroir.
