Merlot is the primary grape in Saint-Emilion and Pomerol of Bordeaux France. Its relatively friendly or low maintenance growing characteristics have encouraged the grape to be incorporated into the vineyard management of just about every burgeoning, wine- grape-growing country in the world. Compared to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot grapes ripen fairly early and have lower tannins and higher sugar levels. The grape has suffered a faltering reputation due to its overproduction. This is largely due to its popularity as a blending grape. Respect is due to Merlot especially, simply standing on its own, as some of the great wines of the world, commanding the most expensive prices in the world are made of Merlot.
