As I have previously indicated, the Sonoma Coast and Russian River 2008 vintage is irregular, but you wouldnÆt know that from tasting RuddÆs 2008 Chardonnay Bacigalupi Vineyard. From a 60-year-old vineyard planted on St.-Georges rootstock in the Goldridge soils on West Side Road in Russian River, only 600 cases are produced. The wine possesses terrific complexity and richness as well as abundant notes of leesy brioche intermixed with honeysuckle, white peaches, pineapples and orange blossoms. The complex aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, luscious wine displaying a superb texture and density as well as a long finish with a hint of minerality. This sensational Chardonnay should be enjoyed over the next 3-5 years.
Ever since Leslie Rudd acquired this estate, formerly known as Girard, at the corner of the Silverado Trail and the Oakville Crossroads, he has been hell-bent to build it into not only one of the finest in Napa Valley, but in the world. This has involved a number of bold moves, including installing super-star David Abreu as vineyard manager, bringing in Pat Sullivan as the winemaker, and hiring BordeauxÆs globe-trotting consultant, Michel Rolland. The current portfolio is RuddÆs strongest to date. The Bordeaux varietal offerings come from one of Napa ValleyÆs classic sectors, which many people believe is the sweet spot for Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, the Oakville Corridor. RuddÆs neighbors include such renowned estates as Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle and Plumpjack.
